Common Pests To Look Out For in Florida, Part Two

Living in Florida has many advantages, however the warm and humid weather tends to attract a variety of unwanted pests. In part one of this series, we looked at some common pests in Florida including silverfish and palmetto bugs. In part two, we’ll take a look at a few more pests to look out for in and around your Florida home. Common Florida Pests: Earwigs

Did you know that there are more than 20 species of earwigs in the Unites States alone? These pests look like little insects with pincers or forceps protruding from their abdomen. While they are somewhat intimidating to look at, they are not poisonous and they do not spread disease. Most earwigs prefer wet areas that are cool and out of harm’s way. Since these little critters like to feed on live sprouts or decaying vegetation, they can cause serious damage to your lawn if left untreated.

In order to control the earwigs on your property, you’ll want to eliminate their hiding places. Move any landscape timbers, logs, or decorative stones on your property away from your home’s foundation. Create a new zone that is free of mulch, dead leaves, and other organic materials to store these items. Examine the gutters and downspouts of your house to make sure everything is draining away from your foundation.

Common Florida Pests: Mosquitos and Noseeums

Some other common Florida pests to look out for are mosquitos and noseeums. While both of these insects feed on human blood and leave itchy red spots behind, there is a difference between the two. As you already know, mosquitos are large enough to see with the human eye and swat at, however noseeums get their name from the fact that humans have a hard time seeing them. At their full adult size, noseeums are less than an eighth of an inch long. While these pests or usually found outdoors, many Florida homeowners have to fight them off of their patios to avoid being bitten.

Luckily in Florida, mosquito control is not entirely left up to the individual homeowner. In most counties, the Mosquito Control District has a hefty budget for mosquito control, and they are responsible for tracking, surveying, and spraying for mosquitos. Homeowners can do their part to reduce a mosquito infestation by eliminating areas of standing water in their lawns and unclogging gutters.
