Common Florida Pests: Silverfish

Silverfish are among the spookiest looking insects you can find in Florida. If you notice a scary looking bug in your home that bears a slight resemblance to the aliens in Men In Black, you may have a silverfish infestation. As it’s name implies, a silverfish insect resembles a small, skinny fish with a tapered end. Their color can change as they age, starting out white but turning darker as they develop scales on their bodies. Less than an inch long, these pesky insects love to digest cellulose, so you may find them chomping on cardboard boxes or books in the attic. They also love to munch on things like flour, dry pasta, and even boxes of cereal.

Unfortunately, Florida homes are especially vulnerable to silverfish because they prefer warm weather and high humidity. To prevent these insects from getting a foothold in your house, consider the tips below.

  • Always store your food in airtight containers.
  • Throw away or recycle old newspapers and magazines that you have around the house.
  • Check your bookcases at least twice a year for signs of infestation.
  • Use a dehumidifier in your house.
  • Clean and dust your home on a regular basis.

Common Florida Pests: Palmetto Bugs

Living in Florida, you’ve probably heard a lot of people talk about palmetto bugs. These little critters look like huge cockroaches, and they earned their name because they like to hide under the safe, shaded leaves of palm trees. These pests carry a variety of disease-causing pathogens from their tendency to hide in unsanitary areas such as sewers and drains. They can easily contaminate kitchen counters, clean dishes, and even food.

Palmetto bugs prefer to hang out in large groups, sometimes among hundreds or thousands of others, and they like to hide in places that are dark and damp. The foundation of your house and even your pool are prime real estate for these bugs. In order to prevent these pests from infesting your Florida home, it’s important to keep your home clean and tidy. You can also:

  • Check your plumbing for any leaks and tighten them when necessary.
  • Throw away old newspapers and clear out your cabinets.
